The IATA Operational Safety Audit (IOSA) programme was introduced in 2003 to create harmonisation of operational safety standards. It was developed to enable operators to audit to a shared standard thus eliminating the need for operators to duplicate audits of other operators who conform to the IOSA standards. Since its inception IOSA has grown in recognition to become the industry benchmark for safety auditing.

The IATA Safety Audit for Ground Operations (ISAGO) programme has been introduced to compliment the IOSA programme and is conducted to the same high standards that are expected when undertaking an IOSA audit. The main aim of ISAGO is to enable ground handling service providers to operate to a single global standard which will contribute to safer operations and a reduction in accidents. It also helps to reduce the number of audits undertaken by several operators of ground handling service providers as the numerous audits can now be substituted by a single ISAGO audit recognised by all operators.
